Spring at the Great Slab (Bowfell)
A 15km hike to find fresh, delicious water springing from the earth at 800m above sea level.
Service Description
Bowfell is the fifth highest mountain in the Lake District and boasts spectacular views of the highest (Scafell Pike), as well as the Cumbrian coast, Greater Langdale and even Lake Windermere. On this route, we begin by making a standard approach to the summit (up The Band), before branching off to follow the climbers traverse. Despite it's name, this path is suitable for hikers and offers some spectacular views down to the valley below. We follow this to the base of Bowfell Buttress and The Great Slab - where a remarkable spring flows from the base of the rock - offering fresh, cool, delicious water at 800m. From here there is a slightly more technical scramble up the side of the Great Slab, before we go on to the summit - where if the weather allows we will stop for lunch. After a short break, we will descend to Ore Gap on the ridge, and then on down to the tarn, where on hot days there will be the option to have a short dip. The long descent back into Langdale is made all the sweeter with the promise of a choice of excellent pubs at the end. 15km - 910m - 1 Wainwright I ask that all participants bring (as a minimum) the following to my walks: Waterproof Top and Bottoms Water Packed Lunch and plenty of Snacks Warm Layers Sun Protection If there is an item on the list that you don’t have but you’d still like to take part – please get in touch and I will try and find something for you to borrow.
